Bananas & Splinters? Who Would Have Ever Guessed?

Did you know that you can use a ripened banana to remove a splinter? Neither did I. Let me share with you what I’ve learned but not yet experienced myself, since I haven’t had a splinter since I was a child. Maybe you can try it the next time you or your child gets a splinter without having to use a sterilized tip of a needle. Who wants to have a needle dug into their skin anyway?

A ripened banana peel is high in digestive enzymes. The enzymes have a drawing and drying action which can draw out foreign matter from the skin. You’ll know when the banana is ripened when you see the brown spots on them.

Here’s what you can do.
Cover the area where the splinter is with a cut out piece of the ripened banana peel, using the brown piece of the peel. Place the inside of the banana peel on the skin with the peel on the outside and wrap it with surgical tape over the affected area. The best surgical tape I’m told is the one that is found in surgical pharmacies that come in rolls of shiny cloth without the dispenser. This seems to be non-irritating to the skin.

Leave the peel wrapped over the affected area overnight. In the morning, either the splinter or foreign matter will be bought to the surface, making it easier to remove it or the splinter may show up on the peel itself. If the splinter is really deep, it may take a few days to come the surface. Therefore, you will need to repeat this procedure each night with a fresh piece of the ripened banana peel.

Good luck and keep us posted if it works!
